The Garden Artisans is a landscape DESIGN + BUILD firm serving Downeast Maine.

Artisans of earth, stone and plants; we place the utmost value on fine detailing and intelligent construction, assembling landscapes with a careful eye and a clear rationale and intent.

Planting

The Garden Artisans has completed all types of planting installations from low maintenance native landscapes to the installation and continued care of rare and specimen plants. We are as comfortable handling large mature trees as we are delicate items with specific cultural requirements. We have an extensive network of plant distributors across the country allowing us to consistently provide high quality trees, shrubs, and perennials. We also propagate and source plants that are typically not commercially available, offering the discerning client a diverse and intriguing plant palette. We have a passion for garden curiosities, with unique offerings like Himalayan Hellebores, rare Peonies, and Chinese hardy Orchids. Please contact us for a list of unique plants that are currently available.

Stonework

Our masons have undertaken a range of patio, terrace, and driving court installations out of everything from hand split granite pavers to concrete unit pavers. We regularly install all types of stone steps, walkways, walls and garden elements such as benches, tables, plinths and sculpture. We maintain relationships with local quarries and individuals involved in demolition to keep us informed of the best and most interesting items reclaimed from old estates, foundations, and mills. We are passionate about sourcing unique pieces of aged stone, their inclusion in a project granting a timeless appearance.

Maintenance

Our approach to landscape maintenance is informed by a studied understanding of just how landscapes function. Pairing an education in ecology with lessons learned from years of agricultural experience we employ ecologically integrated methods of caring for your plants. This means that we support the vitality of plants in your landscape by supporting the underlying processes at work, what we call a 'whole systems approach'. This sustainable approach leads to landscapes and gardens that are increasingly healthy and more resilient to environmental contingencies such as drought and extreme temperature fluctuations. We are committed to using sustainable maintenance practices because they are better the Client, Gardener and the Environment.
